UNSW Roundhouse
As part of the broader University of NSW campus, new active and passive external spaces were arranged along a pedestrian spine, linking the building westward to Anzac Parade.
The building’s elegant original form, designed by the NSW Government Architect’s Joseph van Der Steen with Edwards Madigan Torzillo Briggs, is made clearer with the removal of ad-hoc additions, claddings, linings and fittings.
The focus of the project was on the dramatic multi-use interior. TZG aimed to revive the building’s usage, and bring its energy, thermal and acoustic performances up to contemporary requirements, upgrading the building’s presentation with polished stone panels and parquetry flooring.
Prized mid-century modern elements were conserved with elegant interventions to ensure their compliance with the building code.
The University’s requirement for a refined finish was balanced with the robust performance needed for intensive use and heritage conservation. The design accommodates event infrastructure, sophisticated acoustic control, controlled daylighting and the demand for low-energy usage.
Flexible spaces, now used for event support and smaller student meet-up areas, add to the generous capacity of the central space. The well-loved Uni Bar has been retained and refurbished with a shady beer garden.
