St. Luke’s Grammar School – Junior Campus
The origins of the name Dee Why are mysterious, but it is thought that the original inhabitants were the Dharug people, whose middens have been detected at the southern end of the beach, not far from this site.
Coastal views from the rooftop garden early learning centre, and ‘snapshot’ views of the beach from the lower learning spaces connect the pupils and staff to their beautiful surroundings.
The subtle grey of the external finishing is contrasted with the vibrant atrium balconies. As the nearby coastline undulates, so does the sinuous line of the balconies, defining entries and teaching zones.
Complying with the NSW Education SEPP, active outdoor learning, flexible indoor spaces and facilities for collaborative activity are focussed on the north-facing open atrium. Large sliding screens open each space to the atrium, which links access throughout.
The high-performance envelope is faced with no-maintenance pre-finished panels. An outside sequence of active and quiet play areas allow for easy supervision and generous landscaping. The overall flexibility of the design allows for any future education style.
