The Local Connections restaurant and bar is seated within the 90’s addition to the original Shortland Union Building, one of Newcastle University’s founding buildings dating from the mid-1960s. At the centre of the space, both the bar and a large central joinery element display Hunter Region produce in distinct ways. The new structure mediates between the courtyard, around which the original building is built, and the spectacular sloping woodland to the northeast.

The original large interior has been subdivided into more intimate spaces with niches for smaller groups while the kitchen and bar have been set off to the side, integrated into the building’s existing services.

The Local Connections’ new materials echo those of the original building: natural materials such as timber, tile, brass, and steel. Against them, furniture and fabric balance the composition, hues and tones in complementary colours.
