Quadrangle Castlecrag
The proposal links a neighbourhood centre and high-end housing with restorative public open spaces connected to its historic suburb. Planned by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahoney Griffin in 1919, Castlecrag’s communal areas, native landscaping, undeveloped foreshore and Prairie-style houses established the context for our proposal.
Through consultation, we heard the community’s desire for low-density development with lush landscaping that complemented the character of Castlecrag. Our proposal registers these desires whilst acknowledging the pressures of the ever-growing city surrounding the site.
The proposal offers a material palette of sandstone, in-situ and precast concrete, brickwork and timber. A range of densities, details, textures and tones that refer to and acknowledge the history of Castlecrag while ensuring its future.
