An 1890’s house in a Heritage Conservation area is transformed into a low energy workspace that is fully connected to its surrounding landscape.

FFFFFF

The challenge here was to stitch this Federation building into the surrounding landscape for the benefits of natural light, ventilation and solar power, while still respecting the heritage value of the building.

The interior and exterior of the original building were firmly divided, in the 19th century manner.

By bringing in the landscape and opening the interior to natural light above, the inside and outside are integrated.

The relationship between the original and contemporary is reconciled by how the two are situated with each other, and through inventive detailing.

Contemporary use of the building is powered by 91 solar panels that also filter natural light from above. The panels and batteries drive the function of the building for 80% of the year without drawing energy from the grid.

The infiltration of the natural world coupled with sustainable energy leads to an exemplary 21st century workspace that is both calm and refreshing.
