Newtown Silos
Historically, flour milling took place in large city mills next to railway lines. The original concrete silos, timber grain storage bins, the interstitial space, and a new low-rise structure alongside are carefully articulated to be legible as a united whole apartment complex.
The two main foyers are integrated into the ground level bases of the impressive silos and timber bins. Between these structures, landscaping flanks the pathway to the entrances.
The project retains the bold industrial qualities, scale and aesthetics of the existing complex.
The Silos use the expressive circular forms to create unusual but rational room shapes, uniting southern views with northern sunlight. The building’s historic past is recalled in the original raw wall surfaces.
The new low-level building along Gladstone Street forms a street edge with contemporary apartments. Crowning the silos is a new 3-storey metal-clad penthouse with views across Sydney.
