Hudson Vine

  • Name Hudson Vine
  • Client TPD Projects + Shepherd St Pty Ltd
  • Country Gadigal
  • Location Redfern, NSW
  • Year 2023

The Hudson Vine competition proposal seeks to build on an existing community, engage with local history and stand as an exemplar of urban density. The idea of continuity led the creation of the proposal: having historic and contemporary buildings sitting in harmony with one another. The porosity of the ground plane and articulated upper levels allow the suburb to continue growing post-construction, setting the project up for extended future usage.

The existing Red Bloodwood tree roots are embedded in the banks of the ancient Blackwattle Creek, once a site of fishing and fresh water for the Gadigal people.

The celebration of native flora, a rare opportunity in this part of the city, is amplified by the Blackwattle Creek interpretive artworks across the ground plane.

To recognise the distinct character of Redfern, we projected an image for Sydney that celebrates sustainability through a sensitive custodianship of our natural and urban environments.

The project presented an opportunity to design spaces that support diverse income streams, ensuring the operational sustainability of the project. These include short-term and event hires, live works, equipped and non-equipped studio spaces, events in addition to education space, creative retail and dining.
